You use them daily from your note book; you use them with your mobile phone, and even with your printer or other networking devices. But what exactly are they and why should you'll need them?

Why can't I simply plug my laptop straight to the wall outlet? Why does it have to have this extra device that I keep dragging together with it? In case you've inquired these questions, chances are you don't really be aware of the significance about AC adapters.

An AC adapter is a type of power supply. It's a device which offers power to another device, why the redundancy?

Your DC device-your laptop, your cellular phone-needs an AC adapter while it runs using direct current. Consider DC being a different "type" of electricity. DC is normally related to low-voltage devices. Remember, the electricity at your house is 120 volts AC (if you live in the U.S.A. and many other countries). Your microwave oven, your television, and your air conditioning equipment all need 120 volts to run. Your laptop only needs 20 volts or less.

In this sense, an AC adapter is usually a power supply that converts one form of electricity to a new. Therefore, we can safely say that such can also be a power converter.

DC devices, or things that run using direct current, usually are those who use batteries for power. Because DC devices can run independently with the use of batteries, this is the number of electricity for mobile applications-even your car is run on DC.

Also, because of the nature of DC (current only runs one way), a low-voltage DC device may have a battery, charge it, and provides ability to the device all- in-one circuitry (which all starts from the adapter). So with this sense, an AC adapter is also a charger.

Other adapters use the realization they are first in the circuitry by giving some sort of surge protection. If something unexpected occurs to your AC electricity, the adapter breaks the current before it destroys your precious device, so this means they might also serve as surge protectors.

That is it. An AC adapter can be a large amount of things-a power supply, a power converter, and it may also be a charger plus a surge protector. It is that important. So will not take your adapter for granted because your device greatly will depend on it.
